Reggie left some words of wisdom for Doug Bowser

This year marked the first E3 in 15 years without the Regginator at the helm. New Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser took over in April, and he’s immediately won fans over by embracing his namesake for a few laughs.

As well as embracing the meme material over on Twitter, Bowser took part in a great opening skit during Nintendo’s E3 Direct, channelling that same love Reggie had for the big N’s iconic characters.

As it turns out, embracing the history and fanbase of Nintendo’s world-famous IP was something Reggie encouraged Bowser to do before he left office. In an interview with Mashable, the man currently at the helm of Nintendo of America shared the advice his predecessor imparted on his way out.

“I think … the most important thing that he shared with me was really just the importance and, if you will, admiration for our great characters and immersive worlds,” Bowser explained. “And then also the passion our fans have for that. [I need] to make sure that that’s always our focus, to bring smiles to those people’s faces. And that’s been my job since day one, from the moment I arrived at Nintendo all the way until I came into this role.”

It’s fair to say that Bowser has certainly done that, but then it would be surprising if you could make your way to Nintendo’s upper echelons without demonstrating that kind of love and appreciation.

Still, he’s also keen to reassure fans that he and King Koopa aren’t exactly alike.

“I think we have to separate Doug Bowser from Bowser the character and clearly Bowser the character is under the supervision of many at the [Nintendo] development community. It’s been fun to share the name, to embrace it a bit, have some fun with it. But also recognize that we are very, very different.”

Good to know he’s not about to go kidnap any princesses and unleash an army of minions on the world.

Bowser’s done a stellar job in embracing the fans and Nintendo’s trademark goofiness since he came in. Long may his reign continue!
