FIFA 21 On Switch Will Be Another Legacy Edition
This article was originally written for TheNintendoVillage.com, a website I founded and ran from 2018 to 2021.
EA took some stick last year for releasing what was essentially the exact same game for two years running. FIFA 20 on Switch was, to all intents and purposes, FIFA 19, albeit with upgraded kits and team rosters etc. Fans hoping for a little more effort this year will sadly be disappointed.
Over on the FIFA 21 FAQ page, under what can be expected for the Switch version, EA has confirmed that Nintendo fans will once again be getting a “Legacy Edition” of the game:
What will be included in FIFA 21 on Nintendo Switch?
The FIFA 21 Legacy Edition on Nintendo Switch features the latest kits and squad updates for the upcoming season, updated presentation (in-game menus and broadcast overlays), but no new game modes or gameplay innovations.
This is disappointing to hear, especially considering there were hints that the Frostbite engine which powers the other versions of the games may have been headed to Switch. Still, we can’t say we’re overly surprised at the news.
Are you disappointed not to be getting a full-fat FIFA once again this year? Let us know down in the comments.
