Indie World Presentation Roundup
This article was originally written for TheNintendoVillage.com, a website I founded and ran from 2018 to 2021.
We got another great looking batch of indie games showcased in today’s Indie World Presentation, with a number of titles launching today and a few Switch exclusives thrown into the mix too.
Besides the news that Untitled Goose Game is getting a free multiplayer update, here’s all the games showcased in today’s presentation.
Hades
Developer: Supergiant Games
Publisher: Supergiant Games
Release Date: Fall 2020
Opening the presentation was Hades, a rogue-like dungeon crawler that PC gamers have been fans of for some time. You play as the prince of the underworld and attempt to escape hell, advancing the story and growing in strength each time you perish.
If you’ve already dived into the game on PC, you’ll be able to transfer your save between there and Switch.
Hypnospace Outlaw
Developer: Tendershoot / Mike Lasch / ThatWhichIs Media / Xalavier Nelson Jr.
Publisher: No More Robots
Release Date: 27 August 2020
This was a bit of a weird one, but Hypnospace Outlaw is a game that attempts to recreate the experience of the early internet. You have to crack cases by dodging viruses and hunting down hackers in possibly the weirdest concept for a game we’ve ever seen.
If you fancy giving it a try, there’s a free demo available on the eShop later today.
Spiritfarer
Developer: Thunder Lotus
Publisher: Thunder Lotus
Release Date: 18 August 2020
Studio Ghibli fans will undoubtedly recognise the influences behind Spiritfarer. In this charming management sim you have to help various spirits peacefully transition to the afterlife, ferrying them across the seas in your boat in between various other minigames and challenges.
This is the first of the games that’s available later today.
Garden Story
Developer: Picogram
Publisher: Rose City Games
Release Date: 2021
This Zelda-like top-down action/adventure sees you take on the role of a grape - of all things - and are tasked with rebuilding your town full of other fruity inhabitants. Its cutesy artstyle seems to be hiding a rather robust adventure, so this could well be one to keep an eye on.
Subnautica / Subnautica Below Zero
Developer: Unknown Worlds Entertainment
Publisher: Unknown Worlds Entertainment
Release Date: Early 2021
Subnautica is another one that will be familiar to PC gamers, sitting pretty with a 10/10 rating on Steam. It’s one fans have been calling to be ported to Switch for some time, and it seems they’re finally getting their wish.
The survival game sees you crash land on an alien planet, following which its down to you to explore your new terrain, find materials and unlock the mysteries of the planet. Its frigid sequel, Subnautica Below Zero is also arriving early next year.
Takeshi & Hiroshi
Developer: Oink Games
Publisher: Oink Games
Release Date: 18 August 2020
Another game launching today (and the latest game to make its way over to Switch from Apple Arcade) is Takeshi & Hiroshi. A charming take on the RPG, you play as budding young game designer Takeshi who’s building a game for his younger brother, Hiroshi. You get to decide which monsters he faces, and have to strike a balance between challenge and fun in order to make the game enjoyable for your younger sibling.
Raji: An Ancient Epic
Developer: Nodding Heads Games
Publisher: Super.com
Release Date: 18 August 2020
This was the stand-out game for us. Yet another title launching today, Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action/adventure game inspired by the mysteries and mythology of India. There’s a number of ethereal weapons for you to wield, and the scenery and artwork was incredibly impressive.
As mentioned, this is one launching today so head over to the eShop now if you like the look of it!
Bear and Breakfast
Developer: Gummy Cat Studio
Publisher: Armor Games Studios
Release Date: 2021
Ever wanted to play as a bear who runs a B&B? Well, as of next year, you can. Bear and Breakfast is a management sim where you play as Hank the Bear, challenged with building out a shack into a reputable hotel for your guests. We like the premise of this one, and it’s a timed console exclusive which is always cool to see.
A Short Hike
Developer: Adam Robinson-Yu
Publisher: Whippoorwill Limited
Release Date: 18 August 2020
If you’re looking for a more sedate experience, A Short Hike will be right up your alley. Described as a game about ‘going at your own pace’, you can explore a wilderness to hunt down secrets and treasures as a jaunty penguin - chatting with other hiking wildlife as you go. Another timed-console exclusive, and another game launching today!
Card Shark
Developer: Nerial
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Release Date: 2021
Billed as a game that teaches you real card tricks and cheats, Card Shark is a unique take on the card game genre where progression is all about how well you can swindle your opponents. It’s a brilliantly unique concept for the game, and we’re absolutely in love with the painterly artstyle. Here’s hoping the 2021 release date becomes an ‘Early 2021’ as we’re looking forward to getting our mitts on this one.
Torchlight III
Developer: Echtra Games
Publisher: Perfect World Entertainment
Release Date: Fall 2020
The third entry in the dungeon crawling series, Torchlight III is set a century after the preceding title but continues the tradition of fun, solid battling and plenty of loot to scavenge. Building and upgrading forts should be a cool incentive to keep questing, and pets make their welcome return too. Plus, Switch owners will get an exclusive Red Fairy pet, so that’s cool.
Manifold Garden
Developer: William Chyr Studio
Publisher: William Chyr Studio
Release Date: 18 August 2020
Surprisingly the first puzzle game on the list this time around, yet Manifold Garden is undoubtedly striking. The line-drawing artstyle looks like it perfectly complements the perspective-bending, MC Escher inspired puzzles. Should be a great one to drive us barmy, and it’s out today!
Evergate
Developer: Stone Lantern Games
Publisher: PQube Limited
Release Date: 18 August
We’re sure we weren’t the only ones who got massive Ori and the Blind Forest vibes from Evergate, but there are certainly worse games to be compared to. The beautiful art style complements the afterlife setting of the game, with the key to traversal and puzzle-solving being your character’s Soulflame ability.
This is another one that launches today, so let us know down in the comments if you check it out!
As well as the games featured above, we also got a sizzle reel at the end featuring all of the following titles:
Haven
Going Under
The Red Lantern
Unrailed!
Struggling
Inmost
She Dreams Elsewhere
Grindstone
GONNER2
