Analysts Still Predicting A Switch Pro This Year

Each year GamesIndustry.biz polls a handful of analysts about what they expect to see in gaming over the coming 12 months. Unsurprisingly, given all the rumours, many are expecting Nintendo to finally drop a Switch Pro at some point in 2021.

Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games incorrectly predicted the Switch Pro would arrive in 2020, but he’s sticking to his guns this year and is expecting a powerful new system, saying “I predict a beefed-up 4K device is coming during Nintendo's next financial year. And let it be said: "Switch" is just a word.”

He’s backed by Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis who saw most of his 2020 predictions come true. Whilst he doesn’t go into quite as much detail as Toto, he notes “it makes more commercial sense to release an updated version in 2021. I currently have an updated version of the Switch in my forecasts for 2021.”

Mat Piscatella of NPD on the other hand, thinks the Switch will continue to perform strongly without the need for a hardware refresh, with Nintendo happy to push their wildly successful hybrid console with more games and promotions:

“Despite the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, it will be the Nintendo Switch that ends up selling the most units of console hardware in 2021. I will go a step further and suggest this will be driven by content and promotional efforts rather than the release of a new iterative model.”

For what it’s worth, this writer wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo offered some sort of revised system at some point this year. There’s been plenty of info and rumours floating around that suggest Nintendo are indeed working on something new, though 4K might be a stretch. Check out the video below for more!
