It Looks Like Nintendo Are Ending Development For 3DS
This article was originally written for TheNintendoVillage.com, a website I founded and ran from 2018 to 2021.
The 3DS has been on it’s last legs for a while now as we all move on with our shiny new Switches. It seems that Nintendo has finally pulled the plug on any future development for the system, if their latest earnings report is anything to go by.
Whilst it doesn’t explicitly state that the company won’t be developing any new games for the handheld, it doesn’t say it will either. Instead, the focus seems to be on continued promotion of the existing (frankly awesome) library and evergreen titles such as Mario Kart 7 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf:
“For the Nintendo 3DS family, we will continue to fully utilize the platform's rich software library to appeal to consumers purchasing game hardware for the first time, while continuing to drive sales of evergreen titles that leverage the hardware install base.”
It’s a fantastic system, and it’ll likely still serve a purpose as an entry point into Nintendo’s ecosystem for younger gamers, but we’re glad that Nintendo’s development resources are seemingly going to be focused 100% on Switch going forward.
What do you make of this? Will you be sad to see the 3DS go? Let us know down in the comments.
