2K have announced that their upcoming arcade take on wrasslin’ - WWE 2K Battlegrounds - will be released on 18 September, with the game arriving on Switch the same day it appears on other systems.
The game takes a less serious approach to the genre than the mainline sim-orientated series, allowing fans to take control of over 70 superstars from across WWE history. There’s modern heroes such as Roman Reigns, Becky Lynch and Drew McIntyre, as well as legends such as the Undertake, Shawn Michaels and Andre the Giant. More superstars will apparently become available via free updates post-launch too.
The game will feature four different modes: Exhibition, Campain, King of the Battleground and Online. The campaign mode sees you take on the role of seven new WWE hopefuls in the pursuit of a WWE contract, guided by the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Paul Heyman.
King of the Battleground meanwhile is an online, last-man-standing mode where four players start in the ring, with four more on the outside ready to enter as players get eliminated.
Commentary is provided by Mauro Ranallo and Jerry “The King” Lawler, and of course there’s a create-a-superstar mode for you to tinker with too.
The game will come in both Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. Players who pre-order the standard edition will receive Edge as a bonus, as will fans who opt for the Digital Deluxe Edition. That also comes with all versions of The Rock, Stone Cold and Ronda Rousey unlocked from the beginning, as well as 1100 in-game Golden Bucks which can be used to unlock other superstars and cosmetic items.
