Back in 2017 Nintendo released a little console you may have heard of called the Nintendo Switch. They’ve now released their 9 month earnings report and revealed that the hybrid console has shifted a mightily impressive 52.48 million units worldwide.

Those figures mean the console has now surpassed the SNES at 49.1 million units, and is on course to eclipse the 61.91 million combined units shifted by the NES and Famicom by the end of the year.

There’s been some considerable successes on the software front too, with Luigi’s Mansion 3 having sold over 5 million copies since it launched at the end of October, Ring Fit Adventure has racked up 2.17 million sales too, while Pokémon Sword and Shield have combined to outstrip the 11.76 million copies sold by Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee by nearly an additional 5 million units.

Third parties continue to succeed too, with both Marvel Heroes: Ultimate Alliance and Astral Chain passing the 1 million mark - a solid showing for the Switch-exclusive titles. That brings the total of million seller titles on the system during the current fiscal year to 21.

All this means that Nintendo have increased their forecasts for the rest of the financial year, upping their forecasted hardware sales for the year to 19.5 million and software sales to 140 million, from 18 million and 125 million respectively.

Nintendo also pointed out that there’s a strong software lineup in place to close out the fiscal year, and talked up the third party support the system is expected to receive in the coming months:

“We will continue to convey the appeal of both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite hardware, and work to expand their installed base. In addition to Nintendo-published titles like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (January), Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (March) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (March), there are also a robust variety of appealing titles from other software publishers scheduled to be released. We will work to keep the platform energized by continuously introducing attractive new titles in addition to the popular titles already released.”

Needless to say, the Switch is an incredibly healthy place right now, and is outstripping even the PS4’s pace of sales - a system that recently became the fourth best selling console of all time.

Here’s to even more success in 2020!
