Nintendo Shutting Down Mario Content In PS4's Dreams
This article was originally written for TheNintendoVillage.com, a website I founded and ran from 2018 to 2021.
If you’re unfamiliar with Dreams, the PS4 game allows you to create your own games in an intuitive and user-friendly way. Think Super Mario Maker dialled up to 11.
Naturally, some Nintendo fans who own a copy of the game have taken to recreating their favourite characters using the tools available to them, including the portly plumber himself. It was always going to happen really, as was the inevitable blowback from Nintendo.
Dreams user ‘Piece of Craft’ had constructed a rather popular Mario asset which has now been removed due to ‘contains copyrighted material.’ The legal and business affairs division of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe allegedly got in touch and said Nintendo themselves had objected to the use of their IP.
Which is fair enough really. There’s no denying that the creations within Dreams are a lot closer to Nintendo’s own creations than mere fan art. Still, it’s a shame we won’t see what the community is able to cook up.
