Nintendo Has 'Big Plans' For Mario's 35th Birthday
This article was originally written for TheNintendoVillage.com, a website I founded and ran from 2018 to 2021.
Update: This story has now been corroborated by two more outlets. Eurogamer have confirmed the story, and suggest that a new Paper Mario game is indeed in the pipeline, as is a Deluxe version of the Wii U’s Super Mario 3D World and a remaster of Super Mario Galaxy.
Meanwhile, Gematsu have also suggested that both Super Mario 64 and the Gamecube’s Super Mario Sunshine are in-line for ports as well. Naurally, take these rumours with a pinch of salt, but things certainly sound promising. Nintendo have, as ever, declined to comment on the rumours, but that hasn’t stopped Andy Robinson, who broke the news on VGC, from putting it in much clearer terms over on Twitter:
Original Story: This year marks the 35th anniversary of everyone’s favourite plumber-turned-hero, and Nintendo reportedly have a whole lot of goodies in the pipeline to celebrate.
According to VGC, who cite multiple sources, there’ll be a whole host of remasters coming to the Switch, encompassing “most of Super Mario’s 35-year back catalogue.” Perhaps most excitingly though, is the prospect of a new Paper Mario game. That’s not the first time we’ve heard such a thing is in the works either.
As VGC note, Nintendo last went all out for Mario’s 30th anniversary back in 2015, with various crossovers and two special 8-bit amiibo, culminating in the release of Super Mario Maker for Wii U. Nintendo have already got the ball rolling on the crossover front, with the new partnership with LEGO revealed earlier this month.
Nintendo were reportedly aiming for a big reveal at E3, but as the conference has now shifted to an online event in the wake of coronavirus concerns, the big N are apparently re-evaluating their plans.
Either way, we would absolutely take a whole host of Super Mario games on Switch if they’re going. What would be your top picks? Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy for us. How about you?
